The symbolic story of tribulation and redemption is represented in this early Christian painting of the biblical story of "The Three Hebrews in the Fiery Furnace". From the Catacombs of Priscilla, Rome, Italy. Late 3rd century / Early 4th century.

The fiery furnace is a story from the Book of Daniel in the Tanakh/Old Testament. The story is well-known among Jews and Christians. http://commons.wikimedia.org

Saint Ananias, Saint Azarias and Saint Misael
(Seventh Century B.C.)

by The Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary
December 16, 2000

These were the three handsome and royal Jewish boys (the Babylonian names were Sidrach, Abdenago and Misach) who, during the Babylonian Captivity of the Jews, which lasted from 606 B.C. to 536 B.C., as companions of the great prophet Daniel, by command of the King Nabuchodonosor were asked to eat forbidden food and adore a golden statue. When they refused, they were thrown into a fiery furnace, which had no power to destroy them. It was they who composed, while in the midst of the flames, the beautiful canticle found in the third chapter of the prophet Daniel which the Catholic Church still sings and recites, and which begins, "Blessed art Thou, O Lord, the God of our fathers, and worthy to be praised and glorified and exalted above all forever." Saint Ananias, Saint Azarias and Saint Misael are popularly known as "the three young men in the fiery furnace."

From Irenaeus, Against Heresies

Book 5, Chapter 5
Saint Irenaeus (130-202)

[ ] when Ananias, Azarias, and Misael were cast into the furnace of fire sevenfold heated, they sustained no harm whatever, neither was the smell of fire perceived upon them. As, therefore, the hand of God was present with them, working out marvellous things in their case-[things] impossible [to be accomplished] by man’s nature-what wonder was it, if also in the case of those who were translated it performed something wonderful, working in obedience to the will of God, even the Father?

Now this is the Son of God, as the Scripture represents Nebuchadnezzar the king as having said, "Did not we cast three men bound into the furnace? and, lo, I do see four walking in the midst of the fire, and the fourth is like the Son of God." Neither the nature of any created thing, therefore, nor the weakness of the flesh, can prevail against the will of God.

For God is not subject to created things, but created things to God; and all things yield obedience to His will.

Wherefore also the Lord declares, "The things which are impossible with men, are possible with God."

As, therefore, it might seem to the men of the present day, who are ignorant of God’s appointment, to be a thing incredible and impossible that any man could live for such a number of years, yet those who were before us did live [to such an age], and those who were translated do live as an earnest of the future length of days; and [as it might also appear impossible] that from the whale’s belly and from the fiery furnace men issued forth unhurt, yet they nevertheless did so, led forth as it were by the hand of God, for the purpose of declaring His power: so also now, although some, not knowing the power and promise of God, may oppose their own salvation, deeming it impossible for God, who raises up the dead; to have power to confer upon them eternal duration, yet the scepticism of men of this stamp shall not render the faithfulness of God of none effect.

Reflection by Pope John Paul II:
The song of Ananias, Azarias and Misael

(Prophecy of Daniel 3, 57-88, 56)

The song of Ananias, Azarias and Misael, sentenced to die in a fiery furnace by the King of Babylon because of their faith

In the middle of the sentence received by the hands of the King, the three "do not hesitate to sing, rejoice, praise... " Nightmares are rolled back as the mist before the Sun, fears dissolve, the suffering is cancelled when the human being becomes praise and trust, expectation and hope...This is the force of the sentence when it is pure, intense, when it is full of abandonment in God, provident and Redeemer." "The song ... sung by three young people as they are going to suffer martyrdom because of their faith, it is a solemn praise to the Lord for all the wonders of the universe.” Their faith gives rise to the intervention of the Lord, which protects them from death." "The hymn describes a kind of cosmic procession, in which all creatures bless the Lord. The man should add to this concert of praise your voice cheerful and confident, accompanied by a coherent and faithful life." John Paul II, 10-VII-2002

OUR FATHER

Our Father, Who Art In Heaven
Hallowed Be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy Will be done
On earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
Liberate us from all temptation[*]
And deliver us from all evil. Amen

[*] Liberate us is in keeping with the original Latin text.
God usually does not "lead us" to temptation
       (unless we are tested),
but gives us the grace to overcome and/or resist it

HAIL MARY

Hail Mary, full of grace
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art though among women,
And blessed is the fruit
Of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mary of God
Pray for us sinners
Now, and in the hour
Of our death. Amen

APOSTLE'S CREED

I believe in God, the Father Almighty Creator of Heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ, His Only Son, our Lord;
Who was conceived by the
[work and grace of the] Holy Ghost,[*]
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into the Dead.[**]
On the third day, He rose again;
He ascended into Heaven,
And sits at the right hand of God,
the Father Almighty.
From thence he shall come to judge
the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost,[*]
The Holy Catholic Church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins.
The resurrection of the body,
And life everlasting. Amen

[**] the Dead: "inferi", the underworld or the dead in Latin.

DE PROFUNDIS

Out of the depths I have cried to Thee, O Lord:
Lord, hear my voice.
Let Thine ears be attentive
to the voice of my supplication.

If thou, O Lord, wilt mark iniquities:
Lord, who shall abide it.
For with Thee there is merciful forgiveness:
and because of Thy law,
I have waited for Thee, O Lord.

My soul hath waited on His word:
my soul hath hoped in the Lord.
From the morning-watch even until night,
let Israel hope in the Lord.

For with the Lord there is mercy:
and with Him plenteous redemption.
And He shall redeem Israel
from all her iniquities.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost[*],
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen

[*] Holy Ghost: may be substituted with the current Holy Spirit.

Perdona nuestras ofensas,

perdonamos a los que nos ofenden,
No nos dejes caer en la tentación,

CREDO

Creo en Dios, Padre Todopoderoso,
Creador del cielo y de la tierra.
Creo en Jesucristo,
Su único Hijo, Nuestro Señor,
Que fue concebido por obra
y gracia del Espíritu Santo,
Nació de la Santa María Virgen;
Padeció bajo el poder de Poncio Pilato,
Fue crucificado, muerto y sepultado,
Descendió a los infiernos,
Al tercer día resucitó de entre los muertos,
Subió a los cielos
Y está sentado a la derecha de Dios,
Padre Todopoderoso.
Desde allí ha de venir a juzgar
a los vivos y a los muertos.

Creo en el Espíritu Santo,
La Santa Iglesia Católica,
La comunión de los santos,
El perdón de los pecados,
La resurrección de la carne
Y la vida eterna. Amén
