The Sending of the Holy Spirit

From The Treatise Against Heresies by Saint Irenaeus, bishop
(Lib. 3, 17. 1-3: SC 34, 302-306)

The Lord said to the disciples: Go and be the teachers of all the nations; baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. With this mandate He gave them the power to regenerate men in God. God had promised through the mouths of the prophets that in the last days He would pour out His Spirit on His servants and handmaids, and that these would prophesy.

For this the Holy Spirit descended first over the Son of God, who had become Son of man so that in this way, remaining within Him, inhabiting the human species, reposing over men and residing in the Opus molded by the hands of God, the Spirit could thus realize in man the will of the Father and renew His will from its ancient condition to a new one, created within Christ.

Saint Luke narrates for us how this Spirit, after the Ascension of the Lord, came down on the disciples on the day of Pentecost, with the power to give to all men entry into Life and to give its plenitude for the new alliance: for this, all disciples praised God in unison and in all known tongues, reuniting the Spirit in the unity of distant peoples and offering to the Father the first fruits of all the nations.

For all this the Lord promised to send that Advocate that would give us the capacity of God. In the same manner as dry wheat cannot become a compact mass of dough and one loaf of bread without first being moistened, we also, who are many, cannot become one in Christ Jesus without this water that comes down from Heaven. And just like parched ground yields no harvest unless it receives water, we also, who were as an arid tree, could never bear fruit without this abundant rainfall from on High. Our bodies, in effect, received, by the baptismal bath, the unity destined toward incorruption, and our souls received this union by the Spirit.

The Spirit of God descended over the Lord. Spirit of wisdom and intelligence, Spirit of counsel and fortitude, Spirit of Science (Knowledge) and of the Fear of the Lord. And the Lord in turn gave this Spirit to the Church, sending the Advocate over all the earth from Heaven, which was from where the Lord said that Satan had been cast down like a ray of lightning. It is for this reason that we need this divine shower, so that we bear fruit and not be cast into the fire.

And, since we already have the one who accuses us, we also have the Advocate or Attorney, as the Lord commends the Holy Spirit to the care of man, who is His possession, who had fallen into the hands of thieves, and for whom He felt compassion and bandaged man's wounds, handing over two regal denaries so that we, receiving by the Spirit the image and inscription of the Father and the Son, would make the denaries entrusted to us fruitful, returning them to the Lord with interest.

Let Us Pray
O God, who by the mystery of Pentecost sanctifies Your Church, reaching out across all nations, spill the gifts of Your Spirit over all the confines of the earth and do not cease to realize, today, in the heart of Your faithful, those marvels that you worked in the very beginnings of the preaching of the gospel. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

OUR FATHER

Our Father, Who Art In Heaven
Hallowed Be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy Will be done
On earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
Liberate us from all temptation[*]
And deliver us from all evil. Amen

[*] Liberate us is in keeping with the original Latin text.
       God usually does not "lead us" to temptation
       (unless we are tested),
       but gives us the grace to overcome and/or resist it

HAIL MARY

Hail Mary, full of grace
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art though among women,
And blessed is the fruit
Of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mary of God
Pray for us sinners
Now, and in the hour
Of our death. Amen

APOSTLE'S CREED

I believe in God, the Father Almighty Creator of Heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ, His Only Son, our Lord;
Who was conceived by the
[work and grace of the] Holy Ghost,[*]
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into the Dead.[**]
On the third day, He rose again;
He ascended into Heaven,
And sits at the right hand of God,
the Father Almighty.
From thence he shall come to judge
the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost,[*]
The Holy Catholic Church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins.
The resurrection of the body,
And life everlasting. Amen

[*] Holy Ghost: may be substituted with the current Holy Spirit.
[**] the Dead: "inferi", the underworld or the dead in Latin.

GLORIA

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost[*],
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and ever shall be, world without end.

DE PROFUNDIS

Out of the depths I have cried to Thee, O Lord:
Lord, hear my voice.
Let Thine ears be attentive
to the voice of my supplication.

If thou, O Lord, wilt mark iniquities:
Lord, who shall abide it.
For with Thee there is merciful forgiveness:
and because of Thy law,
I have waited for Thee, O Lord.

My soul hath waited on His word:
my soul hath hoped in the Lord.
From the morning-watch even until night,
let Israel hope in the Lord.

For with the Lord there is mercy:
and with Him plenteous redemption.
And He shall redeem Israel
from all her iniquities.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost[*],
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen

[*] Holy Ghost: may be substituted with the current Holy Spirit.

Pope Leo XIII, February 3, 1888)

Let us pray:
O God, the Creator and Redeemer of all
the faithful, we beseech Thee to grant
to the souls of Thy servants the remission
of their sins, so that by our prayers
they may obtain pardon for which they long.
O Lord, who lives and reigns,

PADRE NUESTRO

Padre Nuestro,
que estas en los Cielos
Santificado sea Tu Nombre;
Venga a nosotros tu Reino;
Hágase Tu Voluntad
en la tierra como en el cielo.
Danos hoy nuestro pan de cada día;
Perdona nuestras ofensas,
Como también nosotros
perdonamos a los que nos ofenden,
No nos dejes caer en la tentación,
y líbranos del mal. Amén

Dios te salve, María,
llena eres de gracia;
El Señor es Contigo;
Bendita Tú eres
entre todas las mujeres,
Y bendito es el fruto
De tu vientre, Jesús.

Madre de Dios,
Ruega por nosotros
pecadores,
Ahora y en la hora
De nuestra muerte.

CREDO

Creo en Dios, Padre Todopoderoso,
Creador del cielo y de la tierra.
Creo en Jesucristo,
Su único Hijo, Nuestro Señor,
Que fue concebido por obra
y gracia del Espíritu Santo,
Nació de la Santa María Virgen;

escucha mi voz;
Estén Tus oidos atentos
a la voz de mi súplica.

Si llevas cuenta de los delitos, Señor,
¿quién podrá resistir?
Pero de ti procede el perdón,
y así infundes respeto.
Mi alma espera en el Señor.

Espera en su palabra;
mi alma aguarda al Señor,
más que el centinela la aurora.
Aguarda Israel al Señor.

Como el centinela la aurora;
porque del Señor viene la misericordia.
la redención copiosa;
y Él redimirá a Israel de todos sus delitos.

Gloria al Padre, al Hijo y al
Espíritu Santo,
como es desde el principio,
es ahora y será por los siglos de los siglos.
Amén
