The Path to Arrive to the True Life

From the Commentary of Saint Thomas Aquinas, presbyter, regarding the Gospel of Saint John (Chap. 14, lect. 2)

Christ Himself is the way. This is why He says: I am the way, which has a very true explanation, because through Him we have access to the Father.

Moreover, as this way is not far from its end, but is instead united to Him, He adds: The Truth and the Life; and thus He himself is both the way and its completion. He is the way according to His humanity; its completion according to His divinity. In this sense, as man, He says: I am the way; as God, he adds: the Truth and the life: two expressions that adequately indicate the completion or goal of this way.

In effect, the completion of this way is the satisfaction of human desire, and mainly man desires two things: first, the knowledge of the truth, which is specifically his own; second, the prolongation of his existence, which he shares with all other beings. Now, very well: Christ is the way to get to the knowledge of the truth, with all and with whom, He Himself, is the truth: Teach me, Lord, Your way so that I follow Your truth. Christ is, in the same manner, the way to come to arrive to life, with everything and with Him, who is Himself, in His person, life: You will teach me the way, the path, of life.

Thus the evangelist identifies the end of this road with the notions of truth and life, which he has already applied to Christ. In the first place, he affirms that He is life, when stating that He was the fount, the source of life; in second place, he affirms that He is the truth when He says that He was the light for all men, since light and truth signify the same thing.

If you are searching for where to go, embrace Christ as your own, because He is the way: This is the way, walk by and for Him. And Saint Augustine says: "Walk through the man and you will come to God." It is better to walk down the road, even limping, than to walk quickly yet not on the way. This is because the one who goes limping along the way, although advancing little, does approach its end or completion; yet the one that steps out of the way, the more he runs, the more he distances himself from the end.

If you are searching for where to go, cleave to Christ, because He is the truth that we desire to reach: My palate reviews the truth. If you are searching for where to stay, cleave to Christ, because He is life: Whoever reaches Me finds life and obtains favor of the Lord.

Cleave, then, to Christ, if you want to live securely; it is impossible for you to get sidetracked, because He is the way. Therefore, those who adhere to Him are not misled; they go on the straight path. Nor can they be deceived, since He is the truth and teaches the whole, complete truth, since He says: I was born for this and for this I came into the world: to declare as a witness, in favor of the truth. You also cannot see yourselves disillusioned, as He is both life and the giver of life, just as He says: I have come so that you may have life, and have it most abundantly.

Let us Pray

Grant us, Almighty God, that the constant meditation of Your doctrine compels us to speak and to act always in accordance with Your will. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit and is God, for ever and ever. Amen

OUR FATHER

Our Father, Who Art In Heaven
Hallowed Be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy Will be done
On earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
Liberate us from all temptation[*]
And deliver us from all evil. Amen

[*] Liberate us is in keeping with the original Latin text.
       God usually does not "lead us" to temptation
       (unless we are tested),
       but gives us the grace to overcome and/or resist it

HAIL MARY

Hail Mary, full of grace
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art though among women,
And blessed is the fruit
Of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mary of God
Pray for us sinners
Now, and in the hour
Of our death. Amen

APOSTLE'S CREED

I believe in God, the Father Almighty Creator of Heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ, His Only Son, our Lord;
Who was conceived by the
[work and grace of the] Holy Ghost,[*]
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into the Dead.[**]
On the third day, He rose again;
He ascended into Heaven,
And sits at the right hand of God,
the Father Almighty.
From thence he shall come to judge
the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost,[*]
The Holy Catholic Church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins.
The resurrection of the body,
And life everlasting. Amen

[*] Holy Ghost: may be substituted with the current Holy Spirit.
[**] the Dead: "inferi", the underworld or the dead in Latin.

DE PROFUNDIS

Out of the depths I have cried to Thee, O Lord:
Lord, hear my voice.
Let Thine ears be attentive
to the voice of my supplication.

If thou, O Lord, wilt mark iniquities:
Lord, who shall abide it.
For with Thee there is merciful forgiveness:
and because of Thy law,
I have waited for Thee, O Lord.

My soul hath waited on His word:
my soul hath hoped in the Lord.
From the morning-watch even until night,
let Israel hope in the Lord.

For with the Lord there is mercy:
and with Him plenteous redemption.
And He shall redeem Israel
from all her iniquities.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost[*],
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen

[*] Holy Ghost: may be substituted with the current Holy Spirit.

Pope Leo XIII, February 3, 1888)

Let us pray:
O God, the Creator and Redeemer of all
the faithful, we beseech Thee to grant
to the souls of Thy servants the remission
of their sins, so that by our prayers
they may obtain pardon for which they long.
O Lord, who lives and reigns,

Padre Nuestro,
que estas en los Cielos
Santificado sea Tu Nombre;
Venga a nosotros tu Reino;
Hágase Tu Voluntad

Danos hoy nuestro pan de cada día;
Perdona nuestras ofensas,
Como también nosotros
perdonamos a los que nos ofenden,
No nos dejes caer en la tentación,

CREDO

Creo en Dios, Padre Todopoderoso,
Creador del cielo y de la tierra.
Creo en Jesucristo,
Su único Hijo, Nuestro Señor,
Que fue concebido por obra
y gracia del Espíritu Santo,
Nació de la Santa María Virgen;

escucha mi voz;
Estén Tus oidos atentos
a la voz de mi súplica.

Si llevas cuenta de los delitos, Señor,
¿quién podrá resistir?
Pero de ti procede el perdón,
y así infundes respeto.
Mi alma espera en el Señor.

Espera en su palabra;
mi alma aguarda al Señor,
más que el centinela la aurora.
Aguarda Israel al Señor.

Como el centinela la aurora;
porque del Señor viene la misericordia.
la redención copiosa;
y Él redimirá a Israel de todos sus delitos.

Gloria al Padre, al Hijo y al
Espíritu Santo,
como es desde el principio,
es ahora y será por los siglos de los siglos.
Amén
