The just king makes the country stable

From the spiritual testament of Saint Louis to his son
(Acta Sanctorum Augusti 5 [1868], 546))

My most beloved son, the first thing I want to teach you is that you love the Lord, your God, with all your heart and all your strength. Without this salvation is not possible.

Son, you must guard yourself from everything that you know displeases God, that is to say, from every mortal sin, in such a manner that you are willing to suffer all types of martyrdoms instead of commiting a mortal sin.

In addition, if the Lord permits you suffer from some trial, you must bear it generously and with thanksgiving, thinking that it is for your own good and that it is possible that you have deserved it. And, if the Lord bestows prosperity upon you, thank him humbly and be vigilant that you become no worse for it, either through vain pride or any other motive, because the gifts of God are not to be cause for you to offend Him.

Assist, with a good attitude and devotion, the divine worship and, while you are in the temple, guard your eyes from wandering and do not speak when it is not necessary, but instead devoutly plead to the Lord, with vocal or mental prayer, arising from the heart.

Have piety for the poor, the downtrodden and the afflicted. Help and console them according to your means. Give thanks to God for your benefits; in this way you will become worthy to receive greater ones. Be just to your subjects, operating with total rectitude and justice, without swaying right nor left. Always put yourself more on the side of the poor rather than that of the rich, until you find out which side is right. Be most diligent in that all your subjects live in peace and with justice, and above all the ecclesiastical hierarchy and members of all religious orders.

Be devout and obedient to our mother, the Church of Rome, and to the Supreme Pontiff, our spiritual father. Strive to remove all sin from your territories, especially blasphemy and heresy.

In conclusion, most beloved son, I give you all the blessings that a loving father can give to his son. May the most Holy Trinity and all the saints protect you from every evil. And may the Lord give you the grace to fulfill His will so that He receive from you service and honor and in this way, after this life, the two of us may come to see Him, love Him and praise Him, for evermore. Amen

PRAYER

O God, who has transferred Saint Louis of France from the efforts of temporal governing to the kingdom of Your glory, grant us, through his intercession, to seek Your kingdom in the midst of our temporal occupations. Through Our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

King Louis IX and Page by El Greco (1541-1614); Musée du Louvre, Paris, France; commons.wikimedia.org

Saint Louis IX, King of France

He is the glorious King of France who was born at Poissy in 1215. He died fighting in one of the crusades to regain the Holy Land for Christians when he was only fifty-five years old.

Saint Louis is the king who started the custom of genuflecting during the Mass when the priest said of the Son of God in the Creed: Et Homo factus est (And [He] was made Man).

Saint Louis fought in two crusades, the last two. He redeemed the Crown of Thorns of Our Lord from the Venetians and built a beautiful chapel for it in Paris, called Sainte Chapelle.

All of Saint Louis’ relics were destroyed by the Masons and the Jews during the French Revolution. But his memory will never die in France, nor in the whole Catholic Church. The city of Saint Louis, Missouri, was named for him by early American Catholics who came from France.

OUR FATHER

Our Father, Who Art In Heaven
Hallowed Be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy Will be done
On earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
Liberate us from all temptation[*]
And deliver us from all evil. Amen

[*] Liberate us is in keeping with the original Latin text.
       God usually does not "lead us" to temptation
       (unless we are tested),
       but gives us the grace to overcome and/or resist it

HAIL MARY

Hail Mary, full of grace
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art though among women,
And blessed is the fruit
Of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mary of God
Pray for us sinners
Now, and in the hour
Of our death. Amen

APOSTLE'S CREED

I believe in God, the Father Almighty Creator of Heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ, His Only Son, our Lord;
Who was conceived by the
[work and grace of the] Holy Ghost,[*]
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into the Dead.[**]
On the third day, He rose again;
He ascended into Heaven,
And sits at the right hand of God,
the Father Almighty.
From thence he shall come to judge
the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost,[*]
The Holy Catholic Church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins.
The resurrection of the body,
And life everlasting. Amen

DE PROFUNDIS

Out of the depths I have cried to Thee, O Lord:
Lord, hear my voice.
Let Thine ears be attentive
to the voice of my supplication.

If thou, O Lord, wilt mark iniquities:
Lord, who shall abide it.
For with Thee there is merciful forgiveness:
and because of Thy law,
I have waited for Thee, O Lord.

My soul hath waited on His word:
my soul hath hoped in the Lord.
From the morning-watch even until night,
let Israel hope in the Lord.

For with the Lord there is mercy:
and with Him plenteous redemption.
And He shall redeem Israel
from all her iniquities.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost[*],
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen

PADRE NUESTRO

Padre Nuestro,
que estas en los Cielos
Santificado sea Tu Nombre;
Venga a nosotros tu Reino;
Hágase Tu Voluntad
en la tierra como en el cielo.
Danos hoy nuestro pan de cada día;
Perdona nuestras ofensas,
Como también nosotros
perdonamos a los que nos ofenden,
No nos dejes caer en la tentación,
y líbranos del mal. Amén

Dios te salve, María,
llena eres de gracia;
El Señor es Contigo;
Bendita Tú eres
entre todas las mujeres,

Madre de Dios,
Ruega por nosotros
pecadores,
Ahora y en la hora
De nuestra muerte.

CREDO

Creo en Dios, Padre Todopoderoso,
Creador del cielo y de la tierra.
Creo en Jesucristo,
Su único Hijo, Nuestro Señor,
Que fue concebido por obra
y gracia del Espíritu Santo,
Nació de la Santa María Virgen;

escucha mi voz;
Estén Tus oidos atentos
a la voz de mi súplica.

Si llevas cuenta de los delitos, Señor,
¿quién podrá resistir?
Pero de ti procede el perdón,
y así infundes respeto.
Mi alma espera en el Señor.

Espera en su palabra;
mi alma aguarda al Señor,
más que el centinela la aurora.
Aguarda Israel al Señor.

Como el centinela la aurora;
porque del Señor viene la misericordia.
la redención copiosa;
y Él redimirá a Israel de todos sus delitos.

Gloria al Padre, al Hijo y al
Espíritu Santo,
como es desde el principio,
es ahora y será por los siglos de los siglos.
Amén
