For me life is Christ, and death is gain

from the homilies of Saint John Chrysostom, bishop
(Ante exsilium, nn 1-3: PG 52, 427-430))

Many are the waves of the sea that endanger us, and a great tempest threatens us: nevertheless, we do not fear being submerged because we remain on foot upon the rock. Even when the sea rages on, the rock will not break; although the waves may rise, nothing they can do against the boat of Jesus.

Now tell me: what are we to fear? Death? Life to me means Christ, and death is gain. Exile? The earth and all that fills it belongs to the Lord. The confiscation of goods? We brought nothing into this world, and we shall surely take nothing from it. I laugh about everything that is feared in this world and about all its goods. I have no fear of death nor do I envy riches. I have no desires to live if it is not for your spiritual good.

For this, I speak to you about what is happening now, urging you to show your charity to confidence. Have you not heard those words of the Lord: where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in their midst? Will not the Lord be present when so many people are gathered by the ties of charity? He has guaranteed His protection; it is not on my strength that I will rely on. I have in my hands His written word. This is my support, my security, my tranquil port. Even though the world be in upheaval, I read this written Word I carry with me, because it is my protecting wall and my defense. And what is it that His Word tells me? I will always be with you until the end of the world.

Christ is with me. What can I fear? May the waves of the sea and the wrath of the powerful come to assail me; all these weigh less on me than a spider’s web. If the love I have for you had not detained me, I would have not waited until tomorrow to move on. In every occasion I say: "Lord, Your will be done: not what this or that fellow wants, but rather only what You want me to do." That is my fortress, my immovable rock, my secure and solid staff. If this is what God wants, may it be done. If He wants me to stay here, I am grateful. Wherever He sends me, I also give Him thanks.

Besides, wherever I am, there you will also be; wherever you are, I will also be: we all form but one body, and the body cannot be separated from the head, nor the head from the body. Although we may be corporally separated, we remain united through charity, and not even death itself will be capable of separating us. Because, even though my body dies, my spirit will live and it will not cast away in forgetfulness you, my people.

You are my fellow citizens, my fathers, my brothers, my sons, my limbs, my body and my light, a light more agreeable than this material light. This is because, for me, no light is better than the light of your charity. Material, visible light is useful for me in this present life, but your charity is what prepares my crown for the future life to come.

PRAYER

Lord God, fortitude of those who confide in You, You who wanted that bishop Saint John Chrysostom shine by his admirable eloquence and by his great fortitude in the midst of trials, make it so that the wisdom of this exemplary doctor of the Church may illuminate us; and that the example of his invincible constancy strengthen us . Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit and is God, for ever and ever. Amen

OUR FATHER

Our Father, Who Art In Heaven
Hallowed Be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy Will be done
On earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
Liberate us from all temptation[*]
And deliver us from all evil. Amen

[*] Liberate us is in keeping with the original Latin text.
       God usually does not "lead us" to temptation
       (unless we are tested),
       but gives us the grace to overcome and/or resist it

HAIL MARY

Hail Mary, full of grace
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art though among women,
And blessed is the fruit
Of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mary of God
Pray for us sinners
Now, and in the hour
Of our death. Amen

APOSTLE'S CREED

I believe in God, the Father Almighty Creator of Heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ, His Only Son, our Lord;
Who was conceived by the
[work and grace of the] Holy Ghost,[*]
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into the Dead.[**]
On the third day, He rose again;
He ascended into Heaven,
And sits at the right hand of God,
the Father Almighty.
From thence he shall come to judge
the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost,[*]
The Holy Catholic Church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins.
The resurrection of the body,
And life everlasting. Amen

[*] Holy Ghost: may be substituted with the current Holy Spirit.
[**] the Dead: "inferi", the underworld or the dead in Latin.
X
GLORIA

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost[*],
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen

[*] Holy Ghost: may be substituted with the current Holy Spirit.

DE PROFUNDIS

Out of the depths I have cried to Thee, O Lord:
Lord, hear my voice.
Let Thine ears be attentive
to the voice of my supplication.

If thou, O Lord, wilt mark iniquities:
Lord, who shall abide it.
For with Thee there is merciful forgiveness:
and because of Thy law,
I have waited for Thee, O Lord.

My soul hath waited on His word:
my soul hath hoped in the Lord.
From the morning-watch even until night,
let Israel hope in the Lord.

For with the Lord there is mercy:
and with Him plenteous redemption.
And He shall redeem Israel
from all her iniquities.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost[*],
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen

[*] Holy Ghost: may be substituted with the current Holy Spirit.

Pope Leo XIII, February 3, 1888)

Let us pray:
O God, the Creator and Redeemer of all
the faithful, we beseech Thee to grant
to the souls of Thy servants the remission
of their sins, so that by our prayers
they may obtain pardon for which they long.
O Lord, who lives and reigns,

PADRE NUESTRO

Padre Nuestro,
que estas en los Cielos
Santificado sea Tu Nombre;
Venga a nosotros tu Reino;
Hágase Tu Voluntad
en la tierra como en el cielo.
Danos hoy nuestro pan de cada día;
Perdona nuestras ofensas,
Como también nosotros
perdonamos a los que nos ofenden,
No nos dejes caer en la tentación,
y líbranos del mal. Amén

Dios te salve, María,
llena eres de gracia;
El Señor es Contigo;
Bendita Tú eres
entre todas las mujeres,
Y bendito es el fruto
De tu vientre, Jesús.

Santa María,
Madre de Dios,
Ruega por nosotros
pecadores,
Ahora y en la hora
De nuestra muerte.

CREDO

Creo en Dios, Padre Todopoderoso,
Creador del cielo y de la tierra.
Creo en Jesucristo,
Su único Hijo, Nuestro Señor,
Que fue concebido por obra
y gracia del Espíritu Santo,
Nació de la Santa María Virgen;

escucha mi voz;
Estén Tus oidos atentos
a la voz de mi súplica.

Si llevas cuenta de los delitos, Señor,
¿quién podrá resistir?
Pero de ti procede el perdón,
y así infundes respeto.
Mi alma espera en el Señor.

Espera en su palabra;
mi alma aguarda al Señor,
más que el centinela la aurora.
Aguarda Israel al Señor.

Como el centinela la aurora;
porque del Señor viene la misericordia.
la redención copiosa;
y Él redimirá a Israel de todos sus delitos.

Gloria al Padre, al Hijo y al
Espíritu Santo,
como es desde el principio,
es ahora y será por los siglos de los siglos.
Amén
