Only in the Lord must we confide
from the Letters of Saint Jerome Emiliani to his Religious Brothers (Venice, June 21, 1535)

Most affectionate brothers in Christ and children of the Society of the Servants of the poor:

Your humble father greets you, and exhorts you to persevere in the love of Christ and in the faithful observance of Christian Law, just as I demonstrated to you in word and deed when I was with you, with the end that the Lord be glorified by me in you.

Our goal is God, source of all good, and as we say in our prayer, only in Him must we confide, and not in others. Our Lord, who is benevolent, wanting to augment your faith (without which, as the Gospel says, Christ could not perform many miracles), and wanting to hear your prayer, determined that you live poor, sick, afflicted, tired and abandoned by all, and that you even be deprived of my corporal presence, although not of the spiritual presence of this your poor father, who loves you so very much.

Only God knows why He works like this with you; yet, we can suspect three reasons:

The first is that our Lord wants to count us as His beloved children, so long as you persevere on His paths; this is what He often does with His friends, so as to sanctify them.

The other reason is that He endeavors to make you trust, confiding exclusively in Him. God, as I have told you, does not realize His works upon those who resist depositing in Him completely their faith and hope; instead, He infuses the plenitude of His charity in those who are full of faith and hope, and realizes great works within them. By having me distance myself from you, and by also distancing from you any favor that might bring you joy, God gives you the opportunity to choose between two things: separating yourselves from faith, returning to the things of the world, or, remaining strong in faith and obtaining in this manner His approval.

And thus we come here to the third reason: God wants to test you like gold in the furnace. The fire consumes the gold's dross, but the good, pure gold remains and thus increases in value. In this same manner God comports Himself with His good servant who waits and perseveres in tribulation. The Lord lifts him up and returns to him, in this world, a hundred-fold what he had left behind for his love for God; and afterwards, God gives him, eternal life.

This is God's comportment with all His Saints. This is what He did with the nation of Israel after having suffered so many trials in Egypt: He led them through the desert in the midst of prodigies; fed them with manna and gave them, above all, the promised land. If you persevere constantly in faith in the midst of temptations, God will give you peace and temporal rest in this world, and imperishable tranquility in the next.

PRAYER

God of all mercies, who made Saint Jerome Emiliani father and protector of orphans, grant us, through his intercession, the grace to remain always faithful to the spirit of adoption that truly makes us Your children. Through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.

OUR FATHER

Our Father, Who Art In Heaven
Hallowed Be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy Will be done
On earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
Liberate us from all temptation[*]
And deliver us from all evil. Amen

[*] Liberate us is in keeping with the original Latin text.
       God usually does not "lead us" to temptation
       (unless we are tested),
       but gives us the grace to overcome and/or resist it
X
HAIL MARY

Hail Mary, full of grace
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art though among women,
And blessed is the fruit
Of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mary of God
Pray for us sinners
Now, and in the hour
Of our death. Amen

APOSTLE'S CREED

I believe in God, the Father Almighty Creator of Heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ, His Only Son, our Lord;
Who was conceived by the
[work and grace of the] Holy Ghost,[*]
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into the Dead.[**]
On the third day, He rose again;
He ascended into Heaven,
And sits at the right hand of God,
the Father Almighty.
From thence he shall come to judge
the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost,[*]
The Holy Catholic Church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins.
The resurrection of the body,
And life everlasting. Amen

[*] Holy Ghost: may be substituted with the current Holy Spirit.
[**] the Dead: "inferi", the underworld or the dead in Latin.

GLORIA

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost[*],

DE PROFUNDIS

Out of the depths I have cried to Thee, O Lord:
Lord, hear my voice.
Let Thine ears be attentive
to the voice of my supplication.

If thou, O Lord, wilt mark iniquities:
Lord, who shall abide it.
For with Thee there is merciful forgiveness:
and because of Thy law,
I have waited for Thee, O Lord.

My soul hath waited on His word:
my soul hath hoped in the Lord.
From the morning-watch even until night,
let Israel hope in the Lord.

For with the Lord there is mercy:
and with Him plenteous redemption.
And He shall redeem Israel
from all her iniquities.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost[*],
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen

Pope Leo XIII, February 3, 1888)

Let us pray:
O God, the Creator and Redeemer of all
the faithful, we beseech Thee to grant
to the souls of Thy servants the remission
of their sins, so that by our prayers
they may obtain pardon for which they long.
O Lord, who lives and reigns,

PADRE NUESTRO

Padre Nuestro,
que estas en los Cielos
Santificado sea Tu Nombre;
Venga a nosotros tu Reino;
Hágase Tu Voluntad
en la tierra como en el cielo.
Danos hoy nuestro pan de cada día;
Perdona nuestras ofensas,
Como también nosotros
perdonamos a los que nos ofenden,
No nos dejes caer en la tentación,
y líbranos del mal. Amén

AVE MARÍA

Dios te salve, María,
llena eres de gracia;
El Señor es Contigo;
Bendita Tú eres
entre todas las mujeres,
Y bendito es el fruto
De tu vientre, Jesús.

Santa María,
Madre de Dios,
Ruega por nosotros
pecadores,
Ahora y en la hora
De nuestra muerte.

CREDO

Creo en Dios, Padre Todopoderoso,
Creador del cielo y de la tierra.
Creo en Jesucristo,
Su único Hijo, Nuestro Señor,
Que fue concebido por obra
y gracia del Espíritu Santo,
Nació de la Santa María Virgen;

escucha mi voz;
Estén Tus oidos atentos
a la voz de mi súplica.

Si llevas cuenta de los delitos, Señor,
¿quién podrá resistir?
Pero de ti procede el perdón,
y así infundes respeto.
Mi alma espera en el Señor.

Espera en su palabra;
mi alma aguarda al Señor,
más que el centinela la aurora.
Aguarda Israel al Señor.

Como el centinela la aurora;
porque del Señor viene la misericordia.
la redención copiosa;
y Él redimirá a Israel de todos sus delitos.

Gloria al Padre, al Hijo y al
Espíritu Santo,
como es desde el principio,
es ahora y será por los siglos de los siglos.
Amén
