The faithful and loyal loving caretaker and guardian
From the Sermons by Saint Bernadine of Siena, presbyter
(Sermo 2, de S. Joseph: Opera 7, 16, 27-30)

It is a general norm that all the special graces communicated to any rational creature that, when divine grace chooses someone for a special mission or a very elevated state of being, God bestows all the charisms that are needed for that chosen person, and adorns them profusely upon them.

This is what was realized in an immiment manner in the person of Saint Joseph, who took on the role of father of our Lord Jesus Christ and who was the true spouse of the Queen of the universe and Lady of the Angels, who was chosen by the Eternal Father as the faithful and loyal loving caretaker and guardian of His most precious treasure; that is, of his Son and His Spouse; a role that Saint Joseph fulfilled with absolute fidelity. For this the Lord tells him: "Very well, most good and faithful servant, pass into the banquet of your Lord."

If we observe the relationship that Joseph has with the entire Church: is he not a specially chosen man, by which and under him Christ was introduced to the world in a wholesome and honest way? Therefore, if the entire Church is indebted to the Virgin Mother, since through her she received Christ, in a similar way she also is in debt to Saint Joseph, after Mary, with special gratitude and reverence.

He, in effect, closes the Old Testament, since in him the patriarchal dignity reaches the promised fruition. Besides, he is the only one who corporally possesed what divine condescendence had promised to the patriarchs and the prophets.

We are to suppose without any doubt that the same familiarity, respect and highest dignity that Jesus Christ attributed to Joseph while he lived here on earth, like a son to his father, has not been denied to him in Heaven; on the contrary, Heaven has overwhelmingly consummated these graces upon Joseph.

For all this, the Lord adds: "Pass into the banquet of your Lord". Even though the festive bliss of eternal happiness enters into the heart of man, the Lord preferred to say to him: "Pass into the banquet", so as to insinuate in a mysterious way that this festive bliss is not only found inside him, but also surrounds and absorbs him from all places, and that it is submerged inside him like an infinite abyss.

Remember us then, most blessed Saint Joseph, and intercede with your prayers before your Son: make it so that the most Holy Virgin, your spouse, be propitious for us, she who is mother of the One who with the Father and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns for infinite centuries. Amen.

PRAYER

O Omnipotent God who, in the dawns of the New Testament, commended Saint Joseph the mysteries of our salvation, deign that now, Your Church, sustained by the intercession of the spouse of Mary, carry to its complete fulfillment the Work of the Salvation of All Mankind. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the Unity of the Holy Spirit and is God, for ever and ever. Amen.

OUR FATHER

Our Father, Who Art In Heaven
Hallowed Be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy Will be done
On earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
Liberate us from all temptation[*]
And deliver us from all evil. Amen

[*] Liberate us is in keeping with the original Latin text.
       God usually does not "lead us" to temptation
       (unless we are tested),
       but gives us the grace to overcome and/or resist it

HAIL MARY

Hail Mary, full of grace
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art though among women,
And blessed is the fruit
Of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mary of God
Pray for us sinners
Now, and in the hour
Of our death. Amen

APOSTLE'S CREED

I believe in God, the Father Almighty Creator of Heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ, His Only Son, our Lord;
Who was conceived by the
[work and grace of the] Holy Ghost,[*]
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into the Dead.[**]
On the third day, He rose again;
He ascended into Heaven,
And sits at the right hand of God,
the Father Almighty.
From thence he shall come to judge
the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost,[*]
The Holy Catholic Church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins.
The resurrection of the body,
And life everlasting. Amen

[*] Holy Ghost: may be substituted with the current Holy Spirit.
[**] the Dead: "inferi", the underworld or the dead in Latin.

GLORIA

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,

DE PROFUNDIS

Out of the depths I have cried to Thee, O Lord:
Lord, hear my voice.
Let Thine ears be attentive
to the voice of my supplication.

If thou, O Lord, wilt mark iniquities:
Lord, who shall abide it.
For with Thee there is merciful forgiveness:
and because of Thy law,
I have waited for Thee, O Lord.

My soul hath waited on His word:
my soul hath hoped in the Lord.
From the morning-watch even until night,
let Israel hope in the Lord.

For with the Lord there is mercy:
and with Him plenteous redemption.
And He shall redeem Israel
from all her iniquities.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost[*],
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen

[*] Holy Ghost: may be substituted with the current Holy Spirit.

Let us pray:
O God, the Creator and Redeemer of all
the faithful, we beseech Thee to grant
to the souls of Thy servants the remission
of their sins, so that by our prayers
they may obtain pardon for which they long.
O Lord, who lives and reigns,

PADRE NUESTRO

Padre Nuestro,
que estas en los Cielos
Santificado sea Tu Nombre;
Venga a nosotros tu Reino;
Hágase Tu Voluntad
en la tierra como en el cielo.
Danos hoy nuestro pan de cada día;
Perdona nuestras ofensas,
Como también nosotros
perdonamos a los que nos ofenden,
No nos dejes caer en la tentación,
y líbranos del mal. Amén

Dios te salve, María,
llena eres de gracia;
El Señor es Contigo;
Bendita Tú eres
entre todas las mujeres,
Y bendito es el fruto
De tu vientre, Jesús.

Santa María,
Madre de Dios,
Ruega por nosotros
pecadores,
Ahora y en la hora
De nuestra muerte.

CREDO

Creo en Dios, Padre Todopoderoso,
Creador del cielo y de la tierra.
Creo en Jesucristo,
Su único Hijo, Nuestro Señor,
Que fue concebido por obra
y gracia del Espíritu Santo,
Nació de la Santa María Virgen;

escucha mi voz;
Estén Tus oidos atentos
a la voz de mi súplica.

Si llevas cuenta de los delitos, Señor,
¿quién podrá resistir?
Pero de ti procede el perdón,
y así infundes respeto.
Mi alma espera en el Señor.

Espera en su palabra;
mi alma aguarda al Señor,
más que el centinela la aurora.
Aguarda Israel al Señor.

Como el centinela la aurora;
porque del Señor viene la misericordia.
la redención copiosa;
y Él redimirá a Israel de todos sus delitos.

Gloria al Padre, al Hijo y al
Espíritu Santo,
como es desde el principio,
es ahora y será por los siglos de los siglos.
Amén
