Do not place absolutely anything before Christ
From the Rule of Saint Benedict, abbot
(Prologus 4-22; cap. 72, 1-12: CSEL 75, 2-5, 162-163)

Whenever you endeavor to begin any good work, the first thing you are to do is to constantly ask God that He be the one that carries it to term, and in this way you will not sadden with our bad actions the One who has deigned to count us among the number of His children; this is because we are to submit ourselves to Him at all times in the use of the goods and gifts that He puts at our disposal. Let it not be that some day, as a father that becomes irritated by our malice, He hands us over to the eternal punishment, like with perverse servants that have refused to follow Him to glory.

Therefore, let us awaken once and for all, obedient to the call with which Scripture beckons us: it is time for us to awaken from our sleep. And, our eyes opened to the Divine Light, let us very attentively listen to the warning that God gives us at each hour: If you hear today His voice, do not harden your heart. And also: Who has ears, listen to what the Spirit says to the Churches.

And what does the Spirit say? Come children, listen to me: I will instruct you in the fear of the Lord. Walk while you have light, before the fog and darkness of death surprise you.

And the Lord, seeking among the multitude of men one who really wants to be his worker, directs to all of them this invitation: is there someone who loves life and desires days of prosperity? And, if you, upon hearing this invitation, respond: "I do", then God tells you: "if you love the true and eternal life, guard your tongue from evil, your lips from falsehoods; guard yourself from evil, work good, seek peace and run after her. If you act like this, my eyes will watch over you and my ears will be attentive to your pleas; and, before you invoke me, I will tell you: I am here". What is there for us that is sweeter, my beloved brethren, than this voice of the Lord that invites us? See how the Lord, with His paternal love, shows us the pathway of life.

So, girded with faith and the practice of good works, let us advance through His paths, taking as our guide the Gospel, so that we reach to see the One who has called us to His kingdom. This is because, if we want to have our abode in the estate of His kingdom, we are to to be mindful that to arrive there we must hurriedly follow the path of good works.

Just like there is a bad zeal, full of bitterness, which separates one from God and takes us to hell, so there is a good zeal, that separates us from vices and leads us to God and eternal life. This is the zeal that monks are to practice with fervent love. That is to say: esteeming others more than one's self; bearing with a patience without limits their weaknesses, corporal and spiritual; placing all their efforts into obeying one another; procuring the good and wellbeing for others, before their own; putting into practice a sincere fraternal love; living always in the fear and love of God; loving their abbot with a sincere and humble charity; not placing absolutely anything before Christ, who is to take us all together to eternal life.

PRAYER
Lord, our God, who made the abbot Saint Benedict an illumined master in the school of divine service, grant us, through his intercession that, preferring Your love to all things, we may advance down the pathway of Your commandments with total freedom of heart. Through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

OUR FATHER

Our Father, Who Art In Heaven
Hallowed Be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy Will be done
On earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
Liberate us from all temptation[*]
And deliver us from all evil. Amen

[*] Liberate us is in keeping with the original Latin text.
       God usually does not "lead us" to temptation
       (unless we are tested),
       but gives us the grace to overcome and/or resist it
X
HAIL MARY

Hail Mary, full of grace
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art though among women,
And blessed is the fruit
Of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mary of God
Pray for us sinners
Now, and in the hour
Of our death. Amen

X
APOSTLE'S CREED

I believe in God, the Father Almighty Creator of Heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ, His Only Son, our Lord;
Who was conceived by the
[work and grace of the] Holy Ghost,[*]
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into the Dead.[**]
On the third day, He rose again;
He ascended into Heaven,
And sits at the right hand of God,
the Father Almighty.
From thence he shall come to judge
the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost,[*]
The Holy Catholic Church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins.
The resurrection of the body,
And life everlasting. Amen

[*] Holy Ghost: may be substituted with the current Holy Spirit.
[**] the Dead: "inferi", the underworld or the dead in Latin.
X
GLORIA

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost[*],
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen

[*] Holy Ghost: may be substituted with the current Holy Spirit.

DE PROFUNDIS

Out of the depths I have cried to Thee, O Lord:
Lord, hear my voice.
Let Thine ears be attentive
to the voice of my supplication.

If thou, O Lord, wilt mark iniquities:
Lord, who shall abide it.
For with Thee there is merciful forgiveness:
and because of Thy law,
I have waited for Thee, O Lord.

My soul hath waited on His word:
my soul hath hoped in the Lord.
From the morning-watch even until night,
let Israel hope in the Lord.

For with the Lord there is mercy:
and with Him plenteous redemption.
And He shall redeem Israel
from all her iniquities.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost[*],
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen

[*] Holy Ghost: may be substituted with the current Holy Spirit.

O God, the Creator and Redeemer of all
the faithful, we beseech Thee to grant

PADRE NUESTRO

Padre Nuestro,
que estas en los Cielos
Santificado sea Tu Nombre;
Venga a nosotros tu Reino;
Hágase Tu Voluntad
en la tierra como en el cielo.
Danos hoy nuestro pan de cada día;
Perdona nuestras ofensas,
Como también nosotros
perdonamos a los que nos ofenden,
No nos dejes caer en la tentación,
y líbranos del mal. Amén

Dios te salve, María,
llena eres de gracia;
El Señor es Contigo;
Bendita Tú eres
entre todas las mujeres,
Y bendito es el fruto
De tu vientre, Jesús.

Santa María,
Madre de Dios,
Ruega por nosotros
pecadores,
Ahora y en la hora
De nuestra muerte.

CREDO

Creo en Dios, Padre Todopoderoso,
Creador del cielo y de la tierra.
Creo en Jesucristo,
Su único Hijo, Nuestro Señor,
Que fue concebido por obra
y gracia del Espíritu Santo,
Nació de la Santa María Virgen;

escucha mi voz;
Estén Tus oidos atentos
a la voz de mi súplica.

Si llevas cuenta de los delitos, Señor,
¿quién podrá resistir?
Pero de ti procede el perdón,
y así infundes respeto.
Mi alma espera en el Señor.

Espera en su palabra;
mi alma aguarda al Señor,
más que el centinela la aurora.
Aguarda Israel al Señor.

Como el centinela la aurora;
porque del Señor viene la misericordia.
la redención copiosa;
y Él redimirá a Israel de todos sus delitos.

Gloria al Padre, al Hijo y al
Espíritu Santo,
como es desde el principio,
es ahora y será por los siglos de los siglos.
Amén
