He administered the Sacred Blood of Christ
From a sermon by Saint Augustine, Bishop
(Sermo 304,1-4: PL 38, 1395-1397)

The Roman Church invites us today to celebrate the triumph of Saint Lawrence, who knew how to overcome the threats and seductions of the world, thus defeating diabolical persecution.

He was, as you have been told more than once, a deacon of the Church at Rome. In this Church he ministered the Sacred Blood of Christ. In this Church he also spilled his own blood for the name of Christ. The apostle Saint John clearly exposed the meaning of the Lord's Supper with these words: Just as Christ laid down his life for us, so we must lay down our lives for the brethen. This is how Saint Lawrence understood it and practiced it. The same thing he had taken from the table of the Lord, he prepared. He loved Christ during his life, and he imitated Him in his own death.

We also, brethren, must imitate Christ if we truly love Him. The best proof that we can give of our love is to imitate His example, for Christ who suffered for us, leaving us an example so we may follow in His footsteps. According to the words of Saint Peter, it seems as if Christ only suffered for those who would follow Him, and that the Passion of Christ would only benefit those who follow Him. The holy martyrs have imitated Christ to the point of spilling their own blood, to the point of the likeness of His Passion. The martyrs have imitated this, but it is not only them who did so. The bridge did not collapse after they crossed it; the fountain has not dried up after they have drunk from it.

Keep this present, my brethren: in the garden of the Lord not only does one find the roses of the martyrs, but also the lilies of the virgins and the ivy of wedded couples, as well as the violets of widows. No man, regardless of class or status, must despair with his vocation: Christ has suffered for everyone. With this truth it is written regarding the One who wants all men to be saved. Christ suffered for all. What the Scriptures say of Him is true: Our Savior desires all men to be saved and to arrive to the knowledge of the truth.

Let us understand, then, how a Christian will follow Christ, in addition to the spilling of His blood and His martyrdom. The Apostle, referring to Christ, says: in spite of His Divine condition, He did not bring attention to His category as God. What magnificient majesty! On the contrary, He empties Himself and takes on the form of a slave. What great humility!

Christ humbles Himself: this is, Christian, what you must strive to do. Christ submitted Himself: how can you be proud? Finally, after having gone through such humiliation and having overcome death, Christ ascended into heaven: let us follow Him, hearing what the Apostle says: As you have resurrected with Christ, let us aspire to the Higher goods, where Christ resides, sitting at the right hand of God.

OUR FATHER

Our Father, Who Art In Heaven
Hallowed Be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy Will be done
On earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
Liberate us from all temptation[*]
And deliver us from all evil. Amen

[*] Liberate us is in keeping with the original Latin text.
       God usually does not "lead us" to temptation
       (unless we are tested),
       but gives us the grace to overcome and/or resist it
X
HAIL MARY

Hail Mary, full of grace
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art though among women,
And blessed is the fruit
Of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mary of God
Pray for us sinners
Now, and in the hour
Of our death. Amen

APOSTLE'S CREED

I believe in God, the Father Almighty Creator of Heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ, His Only Son, our Lord;
Who was conceived by the
[work and grace of the] Holy Ghost,[*]
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into the Dead.[**]
On the third day, He rose again;
He ascended into Heaven,
And sits at the right hand of God,
the Father Almighty.
From thence he shall come to judge
the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost,[*]
The Holy Catholic Church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins.
The resurrection of the body,
And life everlasting. Amen

[*] Holy Ghost: may be substituted with the current Holy Spirit.
[**] the Dead: "inferi", the underworld or the dead in Latin.
X
GLORIA

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost[*],
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen

DE PROFUNDIS

Out of the depths I have cried to Thee, O Lord:
Lord, hear my voice.
Let Thine ears be attentive
to the voice of my supplication.

If thou, O Lord, wilt mark iniquities:
Lord, who shall abide it.
For with Thee there is merciful forgiveness:
and because of Thy law,
I have waited for Thee, O Lord.

My soul hath waited on His word:
my soul hath hoped in the Lord.
From the morning-watch even until night,
let Israel hope in the Lord.

For with the Lord there is mercy:
and with Him plenteous redemption.
And He shall redeem Israel
from all her iniquities.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost[*],
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen

[*] Holy Ghost: may be substituted with the current Holy Spirit.

Pope Leo XIII, February 3, 1888)

Let us pray:
O God, the Creator and Redeemer of all
the faithful, we beseech Thee to grant
to the souls of Thy servants the remission
of their sins, so that by our prayers
they may obtain pardon for which they long.
O Lord, who lives and reigns,
world without end. Amen

PADRE NUESTRO

Padre Nuestro,
que estas en los Cielos
Santificado sea Tu Nombre;
Venga a nosotros tu Reino;
Hágase Tu Voluntad
en la tierra como en el cielo.
Danos hoy nuestro pan de cada día;
Perdona nuestras ofensas,
Como también nosotros
perdonamos a los que nos ofenden,
No nos dejes caer en la tentación,
y líbranos del mal. Amén

Dios te salve, María,
llena eres de gracia;
El Señor es Contigo;
Bendita Tú eres
entre todas las mujeres,

Madre de Dios,
Ruega por nosotros
pecadores,
Ahora y en la hora
De nuestra muerte.

CREDO

Creo en Dios, Padre Todopoderoso,
Creador del cielo y de la tierra.
Creo en Jesucristo,
Su único Hijo, Nuestro Señor,
Que fue concebido por obra
y gracia del Espíritu Santo,
Nació de la Santa María Virgen;

escucha mi voz;
Estén Tus oidos atentos
a la voz de mi súplica.

Si llevas cuenta de los delitos, Señor,
¿quién podrá resistir?
Pero de ti procede el perdón,
y así infundes respeto.
Mi alma espera en el Señor.

Espera en su palabra;
mi alma aguarda al Señor,
más que el centinela la aurora.
Aguarda Israel al Señor.

Como el centinela la aurora;
porque del Señor viene la misericordia.
la redención copiosa;
y Él redimirá a Israel de todos sus delitos.

Gloria al Padre, al Hijo y al
Espíritu Santo,
como es desde el principio,
es ahora y será por los siglos de los siglos.
Amén
