"This joy in God is not like any pleasure found
in physical or intellectual satisfaction. Nor is
it such as a friend experiences in the presence of a
friend. But, if we are to use any such analogy, it is
more like the eye rejoicing in light."
St. Augustine, City of God
LORD, my heart is not proud;
nor are my eyes haughty.
I do not busy myself with
too sublime for me.
I have stilled my soul,
weaned child to its mother,
weaned is my soul.
"People travel to wonder at the height of mountains,
at the huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of rivers,
at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motion of
the stars; and they pass by themselves without wondering."
St. Augustine, Confessions, X
St. Augustine, Confessions, I
"Be still, and know that I am God."
God is our refuge and our strength,
an ever-present help in distress,
Thus we do not fear, though earth be shaken
and mountains quake to the depths of the sea,
Though its waters rage and foam
and mountains totter at its surging.
Streams of the river gladden the city of God,
the holy dwelling of the Most High.
God is in its midst; it shall not be shaken;
God will help it at break of day.
Though nations rage and kingdoms totter,
he utters his voice and the earth melts.
The LORD of hosts is with us;
our stronghold is the God of Jacob.
Come and see the works of the LORD,
who has done fearsome deeds on earth;
Who stops wars to the ends of the earth,
breaks the bow, splinters the spear,
and burns the shields with fire;
"Be still and know that I am God!"
Psalm 46: 2-11
"God is always trying to give good things to us,
but our hands are too full to receive them."
St. Augustine, City of God
Prayer to Saint Monica
Exemplary Mother of the great Augustine, you perseveringly
pursued your wayward son not with wild threats but with prayerful
cries to heaven. Intercede for all mothers in our day so that they
may learn to draw their children to God. Teach them how to remain
close to their children, even the prodigal sons and daughters who
have sadly gone astray. Amen
