Wherefore I wished, and an understanding was given me:
   and I called upon God,
   and the spirit of wisdom came upon me:
And I preferred her before kingdoms and thrones,
   and esteemed riches nothing in comparison of her.
Neither did I compare unto her any precious stone:
   for all gold in comparison of her, is as a little sand,
   and silver in respect to her shall be counted as clay.
I loved her above health and beauty,
   and chose to have her instead of light:
   for her light cannot be put out.
Wisdom 7:7-10
Teach by works more than by words *
As the deer yearns for running water;
   so my soul yearns for thee, O God.
My soul is thirsting for the strong living God;
   when shall I come and appear before the face of God?
My tears have been my bread day and night,
   whilst it is said to me daily:
Where is thy God?
These things I remembered,
   and poured out my soul in me:
   for I shall go over into the place
   of the wonderful tabernacle,
   to the house of God:
With the voice of joy and praise;
   the noise of one feasting.
Psalm 41: 2-5
"There are souls whom God knows He may gain for Himself by this means; seeing that they are completely lost, His Majesty wants to leave no stone unturned to help them; and therefore, though they are in a bad way and lacking in virtues, He gives them consolations and emotions which begin to move their desires, and occasionally even bring them to a state of contemplation, though rarely and not for a long time. And this, as I say, He does because He is testing them to see if that favor will not make them anxious to prepare themselves to enjoy it often."
Excerpt from Way of Perfection, by Saint Teresa of Avila, ch. 16
I believe that God helps those who set out to do great things for His sake and never fails those who trust in Him alone. *
Let Nothing Disturb Thee
Let nothing disturb thee;
Let nothing dismay thee:
All thing pass;
God never changes.
Patience attains all that it strives for.
He who has God lacks nothing:
God alone suffices.
Elevate your thinking, rise to heaven,
For nothing be weary, let nothing disturb thee.
Follow Jesus Christ with elation,
And come what may, let nothing scare you.
See the glory of the world? It's vain glory,
It lacks of stability, all things pass.
I aspire for the heavenly, which always lasts;
Loyal and rich in promises, God does not keep quiet.
Love who deserves love, immense goodness;
Know there is no fine love without patience.
Confidence and alive faith maintains the soul,
Who believes and waits reaches all.
From the harrased hell, even if one can see it,
he mocks its furors, he who has God within.
Should crosses and misfortunes come,
God being one's treasure, we lack nothing.
Go then, goods of the world; go, vain pleasures;
Even if all be lost, God only suffices.
From The Breviary of Saint Teresa of Jesus
Saint Teresa’s special patron in Heaven was Saint Joseph. Saint John of the Cross and Saint Teresa of Avila were instrumental in reforming the Carmelite Order.
