Saint Joseph with the Child Jesus by Juan Sánchez Cotán; 17th century; Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, United Kingdom; http://commons.wikimedia.org
All the full measure of virtues and graces that were conferred by the Lord to his servant Joseph, were in order that he be the worthy spouse and loving protector of Her, whom God had chosen as His Mother. By this standard and the love and appreciation that God had for his most holy Mother, is to be measured the sanctity of Saint Joseph; and according to the concept I have, if there were in the world a more perfect man, better suited, the Lord would have chosen this other man for the spouse of His own Mother.

And so God chose Saint Joseph, as no doubt being the most perfect man that God had on earth. Having raised and prepared him for such high ends, it is certain that God would endow him, with His powerful right hand, the capability to do all things well, and in proportion to our understanding of the divine light of God, infuse Joseph with all the holiness, virtues, gifts, graces and inclinations, both infused and natural.

So as to increase the gifts of grace and confirm Joseph in them, the petitions of our divine Lady intervened immediately as she pleaded to the Most High that, as He wished Her to enter the married state with him, he should be sanctified in order that he could conform to Her most chaste thoughts and desires.

The Lord listened to her plea and His Majesty then worked with the strength of his powerful arm, copying into the spirit and the potencies of the Patriach Saint Joseph, attaining effects so divine, that they cannot be reduced to words. He infused in Joseph the most perfects habits of all the virtues and all gifts.
He rectified and strengthened again his powers and filled him with grace, confirming in him in a most admirable manner, the virtue and gifts of chastity that elevated Saint Joseph higher than the seraphim.

This is because the purity that seraphim possess without a body was given to Saint Joseph in his terrestrial body and mortal flesh, and never did enter into his powers either an image or anything inpure belonging to an animal, sensory nature. And with the total absence of all this and an angelical and columbine sincerity, Joseph became disposed to be in the company and presence of the most purest of all creatures, because without this priviledge it was not fitting nor worthy to be before such great dignity and rare excellence.

However, some priviledges I have understood, were conferred upon Saint Joseph by the Most High due to his great holiness, for those who invoke him as their intercessor, if they do so with dignity.
The first is to obtain the virtue of chastity and to overcome the dangers of carnal sensuality.

The second, to obtain powerful help to depart from sin and to return to the friendship of God.

The third, to reach through his means the grace and devotion of Mary most Holy.

The fourth, to attain good fortune and in the hour of death defense against the devil.

The fifth, that those same demons would fear to hear the name of Saint Joseph.

The sixth, to attain corporal health and the remedy in all works.

The seventh priviledge, to attain the succession of children (descendants) for families.

These and many other favors God extends to those who dutifully and properly ask for the intercession of the spouse of our Queen, Saint Joseph.

And I ask all the loyal, faithful children of Holy Church that they be very strong devotees of him - and in so doing they will know him through their own experience, if they but dispose themselves as is proper to receive and deserve them.
Prayer to Saint Joseph
O blessed Joseph, faithful guardian of my Redeemer, Jesus Christ, protector of your chaste spouse, the Virgin Mother of God, I choose you this day to be my special patron and advocate and I firmly resolve to honor you all the days of my life. Therefore, I humbly beseech you to receive me as your client, to instruct me in every doubt, to comfort me in every affliction, to obtain for me and for all the knowledge and love of the Heart of Jesus, and finally to defend and protect me at the hour of my death. Amen
Go to Joseph
Go to Joseph in thy joys,
   thou wilt rejoice the more.
Go to Joseph in thy grief,
when death knocks at thy door.
Go to Joseph no matter when,
   thy refuge he will be.
He holds the key to Jesus’ Heart,
   Its treasures are for thee!
Amen
