Christ in Glory by Annibale Carracci (1560-1609); 1597-98; Palazzo Pitti, Florence, Italy.
An unusually young Christ is flanked by Peter and John the Evangelist. On the earthly level are Sts Mary Magdalen, Ermengild, and Edward the Confessor, name saint of the picture’s patron, Cardinal Odoardo Farnese. The crawling figure in the middle ground recalls the fact that Edward is also the patron saint of the cripples. www.wga.hu

We have Jesus Christ, Who is our Peace and our Light
From the Treatise of Saint Gregory of Nyssa, Bishop, On the perfect model of the Christian
(PG 46, 259-262)

Jesus Christ is our peace; He has made the two nations [the Jews and the Gentiles] one. Keeping in mind that Christ is peace, we will show the authenticity of our name as Christians if, with our way of living, we can manifest the peace that resides in us, which is Christ Himself. He has brought death to enmity, as the Apostle says. Let us not allow, then, in any way that this enmity revive in us; let us instead demonstrate that it is completely dead. God, for our salvation, gave emnity death in a most admirable manner. Now that emnity is truly dead, let us not be the ones who resuscitate it to the detriment of our souls, with our ire and desires for revenge.

Since we have Christ, who is peace, we also kill the enmity, so that our life is a prolongation of the life of Christ, as we know it by faith. Just as He, breaking down the barrier of separation of the two nations, created in His person only one man, establishing peace, so we also should attract the will not only of those who attack us from outside, but also of those who among us promote seditions, so that this opposition now ceases, between the tendencies of the flesh and the spirit, opposite to each other. Let us endeavor, on the contrary, to submit to the Divine Law the prudence of our flesh, and in this way, overcome this duality that is in each one of us. Let us strive to rebuild ourselves, so that we form just one man, and we thus attain peace within ourselves.

Peace is defined as concord between dissenting parties. Therefore, when this internal war, which belongs to our own nature, ceases in us, and we achieve peace, we ourselves become peace, and in this way we demonstrate in our person the veracity and property of this appellative of Christ.

In addition, considering that Christ is the true Light without any possible mixture of error, we realize that our life is to be also illuminated with the rays of the true Light. The rays of the sun of justice are the virtues that emanate from Him so as to enlighten us, so that we disrobe ourselves from the works of darkness and walk as in broad daylight, with dignity; and, removing from us the ignominies that are committed in secret and working in everything in full light, let us also become light and, as is proper of light, enlighten others with our works.

And, if we bear in mind that Christ is our sanctification, we will abstain from every evil and impure work and thought, with which we will demonstrate that we carry with sincerity His very name, showing the efficacy of this sanctification not with words, but with the acts of our own life.

PRAYER

LET US PRAY,
Almighty and eternal God, whom we confidently invoke with the name of Father, intensify in us the spirit of Your adopted children, so that we deserve to enter into possession of the inheritance that You have promised us. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit and is God, for ever and ever. Amen

OUR FATHER

Our Father, Who Art In Heaven
Hallowed Be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy Will be done
On earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
Liberate us from all temptation[*]
And deliver us from all evil. Amen

[*] Liberate us is in keeping with the original Latin text.
       God usually does not "lead us" to temptation
       (unless we are tested),
       but gives us the grace to overcome and/or resist it

HAIL MARY

Hail Mary, full of grace
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art though among women,
And blessed is the fruit
Of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mary of God
Pray for us sinners
Now, and in the hour
Of our death. Amen

APOSTLE'S CREED
I believe in God, the Father Almighty
Creator of Heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ, His Only Son, our Lord;
Who was conceived by the
[work and grace of the] Holy Ghost,[*]
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into the Dead.[**]
On the third day, He rose again;
He ascended into Heaven,
And sits at the right hand of God,
the Father Almighty.
From thence he shall come to judge
the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost,[*]
The Holy Catholic Church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins.
The resurrection of the body,
And life everlasting. Amen

[*] Holy Ghost: may be substituted with the current Holy Spirit.
[**] the Dead: "inferi", the underworld or the dead in Latin.

GLORIA

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost[*],

and ever shall be, world without end.

DE PROFUNDIS

Out of the depths I have cried to Thee, O Lord:
Lord, hear my voice.
Let Thine ears be attentive
to the voice of my supplication.

If thou, O Lord, wilt mark iniquities:
Lord, who shall abide it.
For with Thee there is merciful forgiveness:
and because of Thy law,
I have waited for Thee, O Lord.

My soul hath waited on His word:
my soul hath hoped in the Lord.
From the morning-watch even until night,
let Israel hope in the Lord.

For with the Lord there is mercy:
and with Him plenteous redemption.
And He shall redeem Israel
from all her iniquities.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost[*],
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen

[*] Holy Ghost: may be substituted with the current Holy Spirit.

Let us pray:
O God, the Creator and Redeemer of all
the faithful, we beseech Thee to grant

of their sins, so that by our prayers
they may obtain pardon for which they long.
O Lord, who lives and reigns,

PADRE NUESTRO

Padre Nuestro,
que estas en los Cielos
Santificado sea Tu Nombre;
Venga a nosotros tu Reino;
Hágase Tu Voluntad
en la tierra como en el cielo.
Danos hoy nuestro pan de cada día;
Perdona nuestras ofensas,
Como también nosotros
perdonamos a los que nos ofenden,
No nos dejes caer en la tentación,
y líbranos del mal. Amén

AVE MARÍA

Dios te salve, María,
llena eres de gracia;
El Señor es Contigo;
Bendita Tú eres
entre todas las mujeres,
Y bendito es el fruto
De tu vientre, Jesús.

Santa María,
Madre de Dios,
Ruega por nosotros
pecadores,
Ahora y en la hora
De nuestra muerte.
Amén

CREDO
Creo en Dios, Padre Todopoderoso,
Creador del cielo y de la tierra.
Creo en Jesucristo,
Su único Hijo, Nuestro Señor,
Que fue concebido por obra
y gracia del Espíritu Santo,
Nació de la Santa María Virgen;

escucha mi voz;
Estén Tus oidos atentos
a la voz de mi súplica.

Si llevas cuenta de los delitos, Señor,
¿quién podrá resistir?
Pero de ti procede el perdón,
y así infundes respeto.
Mi alma espera en el Señor.

Espera en su palabra;
mi alma aguarda al Señor,
más que el centinela la aurora.
Aguarda Israel al Señor.

Como el centinela la aurora;
porque del Señor viene la misericordia.
la redención copiosa;
y Él redimirá a Israel de todos sus delitos.

Gloria al Padre, al Hijo y al
Espíritu Santo,
como es desde el principio,
es ahora y será por los siglos de los siglos.
Amén
